23.3.12 I-MED Offers PIP Breast Implant MRI Scanning

Australia’s largest diagnostic imaging group, the I-MED Network, has been swamped with calls from women with breast implants following the announcement of a new Medicare rebate allowing them to have their breasts scanned to check whether their implants have ruptured.

Introduced by Minister for Health, Tanya Plibersek, the Medicare rebate applies to women with a Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP) breast implant, providing fully-funded MRI scanning services to assess the state of the implant and identify whether or not it is structurally sound. It will be available for 12 months, from 12 March 2012, and the rebate will be offered in 15 I-MED clinics nationwide.

Concern about PIP implants spread globally in December after French health authorities advised women to have these implants removed because of rupture risk. In Australia, the move to provide funded MRI screening for women with these implants followed independent advice to the Minster for Health from the Medical Services Advisory Committee.

Dr Chris Wriedt, Director of Medical Services at the I-MED Network, said MRI screening is essential for anyone with a PIP implant to ensure any rupture is identified.

“MRI scanning is acknowledged as best practice for implant scanning as it is a non-invasive medical test that offers valuable information about breast conditions that cannot be obtained with other imaging techniques such as mammography or ultrasound. A rupture can also occur without a patient realising, so the sooner we assess women with these implants, the better, as removal may be necessary,” said Dr Wriedt.

“I-MED Network clinics provide patients with access to a range of world-class facilities and equipment along with highly qualified specialist radiologists, so we are able to offer women requiring these MRI scans the highest standard of care and assessment,” he said.

Women who have, or believe they have, PIP implants are advised to speak with their GP or specialist medical practitioner to obtain a referral for an MRI scan.
